I'm Chloë Donovan, a British veterinarian and artist with a mission to help animals across the globe, combining both aspects of my career. I am immensely privileged to have a vocation that allows me to explore the world whilst providing veterinary services to animals along my way.

My goal is to use art to tell the stories of those animals - sharing my memories and experiences with you, so you as the viewer feel like you've met these beautiful animals too. I want to bring the wild home.

I donate a proportion of profits from sales of originals and prints to organisations that operate out in the field to protect animals, and work towards long-term solutions to tackle their greatest threats.

Nepal

I spent a month in Nepal this autumn, and I was hugely inspired by their diverse and beautiful terrains - from the immense snowy peaks of the Himalayas to the enchanting tropical jungles of the south.

I have so many plans for Nepal-inspired wildlife paintings that I'm so excited to get started on. I hope to raise funds for some of the brilliant charities I have the privilege to meet out there including the Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust (HART) and Stand Up 4 Elephants.

Madagascar

I recently returned from visiting the incredible island of Madagascar, where I spent a couple of weeks on a veterinary outreach project organised by the Mad Dog Initiative and Travelling Animal Doctors. I was also immensely privileged to see some of the beautiful critically endangered lemurs unique to the island in the wild.

Over the next year I will be producing more Malagasy-themed art to go with my existing 'Maky Telo', to fundraise for MDI.

Mission Rabies is back in Cambodia 🇰🇭

I've been back in Phnom Penh for the last couple of weeks with @missionrabies and @wvscharity as part of a new initiative to further help dogs alongside the vaccine campaign.

As the vaccine teams move across the city, vaccinating tens of thousands of dogs against rabies, teams of tuktuk veterinary ambulances are on call to respond to hundreds of reports of dogs in need of veterinary care. So far, still with time to go, we have attended to over 400 dogs, and provided free sterilisation surgery to about 200.

Over the last 2 weeks I've seen so many dogs suffering from injuries from road traffic accidents and dog fights, mange, chronic eye infections, malnutrition, TVT, tick borne diseases and more. But I also met so many owners who really care for their dogs, and who now know that when their pet falls ill, there is something that can be done. Thanks to charities such as @animal.rescue.cambodia, all owners in Phnom Penh have access to veterinary care.

🐘 World elephant day 🐘

I'm still on a high after getting the opportunity to participate in the collaring of a real elephant last month - and I named this painting 'Selati' after the reserve we were on. 10% of the profits of the sale of this painting, and 50% profits of sales of prints (via Art Print Hub, link in bio) will be donated to @elephantsalive to help real Elephants in Southern Africa.

Introducing the wildlife behind the art 🐾

'Sentinel' is a portrait of an African Wild Dog, a very special species. The populations of these endangered carnivores are dwindling with ever increasing human encroachment on their habitat. They suffer huge losses due to conflict with farmers, accidental killings in snares and by vehicles, and infectious disease which can be spread by domestic dogs such as Distemper and Parvovirus. It is thought that there are only about 1400 mature individuals remaining in the wild, in fractured populations across Africa.

I had the immense pleasure of being part of a team in South Africa a couple of weeks ago where a young male was collared in order to track and study his group, so that more effective measures can be implemented to protect them.

This painting is available to purchase with 10% profits to be donated to @wildlife_act, who do vital work out in the field to protect these magnificent dogs.

An absolute honour to join Wildscapes Veterinary and Conservation Services in Hoedspruit last week for a successful rhino dehorning mission, helping to protect these magnificent creatures from poaching by removing the bounty from their heads.

If you have any questions about this procedure check out Joel's story highlight @the_conservation_vet. It's painfree, efficient, and life saving. Rhino horn, for no reason reason at all, is worth an estimated $60k per kilogram on the black market, and there populations are being decimated because of it. So far really positive impacts have been recorded on reserves that have started performing this procedure, far outweighing the risks. It's not the ultimate answer, but it is buying these rhinos time.

Introducing the wildlife behind the art 🐘

'Selati' is the third painting I will be bringing to @exhibitionwildlifeart this weekend. I named this piece after Selati Game Reserve @selatiresearch in South Africa, which is where I participated in the collaring of a real African elephant matriarch. It is critical to monitor herds in order to protect them, manage them effectively and allow them to thrive - and tracking collars are an excellent tool to help do that. Thanks to this collar, the movement patterns of her and her family group can be tracked, allowing for more in depth research and identification of their critical habitats. When I look at this painting of an elephant bull I remember how that elephant's skin felt under the scorching South African sun, and the almighty whoosh of her breath on my hand from the end of her trunk.

Introducing the wildlife behind the art 🦒

'Ol Jogi' is the second painting I will be bringing to @exhibitionwildlifeart this weekend. I named this piece after Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy in Laikipia county, Kenya, which was the location of a real life giraffe cow who I helped to treat back in 2016 when I was a vet student. She had been trying to deliver her calf for three days to no avail, and sadly the calf did not survive. Thanks to the expertise of the Kenya Wildlife Service we were able to immobilise her and help deliver her calf, so that she at least would survive. When I look at this portrait I remember the bristly coat of that giraffe, and the immense strength of her neck muscles under my hands as we held her.

They are the only NGO in the world dedicated only to giraffes, working in 19 African countries to restore their declining populations and ranges.

Introducing the wildlife behind the art 🦏

'Saitabao' is the first painting I will be bringing to @exhibitionwildlifeart this weekend. I named this piece after a real White Rhino whose wounds I helped to treat in central Kenya in 2016 - my first hands on experience with this magnificent species. With this painting I wanted to replicate the texture of rhino skin as accurately as possible, to bring the portrait to life and in doing so share my memory of the real Saitabao with those who view the painting. I want you to feel like you've met him too.

This past week this painting has been particularly fresh in my mind, as I've been in South Africa participating in a rhino dehorning mission - an emergency intervention to remove as much horn as can safely and painlessly be removed, in order to disincentivise poachers from savagely ending their lives. Rhino horn is estimated to be worth $60,000 per kilogram on the black market, making it more valuable than gold. Because of this, hundreds of rhino are poached every year, with South Africa being the epicentre.

This painting will be available for purchase both in person and in the online gallery from the 26-28th of July via Exhibition Wildlife Art. 10% of profits from the sale will be donated to @wildwonderful_world for their rhino conservation fund. They fund conservation projects in South Africa such as emergency veterinary operations, rhino horn trimming missions, and rapid response anti-poaching support.

There are four species of monkey in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 and I have been lucky enough to photograph all four in the wild in various places 🐒

2/4 of these species are classified by the IUCN as endangered, with populations decreasing due to threats to their habitats such as urbanisation and agriculture (especially logging and palm oil plantations). These intelligent creatures are also exploited by the illegal pet trade, as monkeys are all over the world. It's because of this exploitation that I have had the opportunity to get hands on with the care of some of these species, but I would much rather only ever see them through my camera lens in the wild.

I spent 6 weeks in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 showing @loopabroad pre-vet students the best career in the world 🩺

From caring for rescued wildlife at @rescuecentercr 🦥, to hiking with hundreds of rescued street dogs in the mountain sanctuary of @territorio_de_zaguates 🐕, to assisting in behavioural ecology field research with @dolphinsgd 🐬, no day was the same and it was an honour to work with so many passionate students at the beginning of their careers, and be a small part of that journey.

If you're an undergrad student thinking of applying to vet school, or pursuing a career with wildlife, I can't recommend Loop Abroad highly enough. The vetmed classes will put you a long way ahead of your peers - I genuinely didn't get a lot of these classes even in vet school - but it's the experience of going out to see the world that is truly priceless. Volunteering on a veterinary project in India when I was 19 changed my life and showed me there is more than just the traditional pathway to follow. To date I still think that's probably the best decision I ever made. 🌎🌍🌏

I have a very exciting double announcement!

Firstly, my painting 'To Dust You Shall Return' has been accepted into the 2024 @artistsforconservation virtual exhibit and companion book, which will take place in September. This is my second year with a piece in this exhibit and I'm very honoured to be selected. This painting is very close to my heart, as it is a composition I spent a lot of time creating from photos I was lucky enough to take in Etosha National Park in Namibia in 2022.

Secondly, and unbelievably, I have been promoted to Signature Member status within the Artists for Conservation community, which is really an ambition come true. AFC is the world's leading nature art organisation and I am blessed to be a member amongst so many of the world's greatest wildlife artists.

I was incredibly lucky to see four wild sloths during two trips to Manuel Antonio last month. This is one of the four species of three-toed sloths, which are rarely seen in captivity due to their delicate environmental needs. It was beautiful to see them in their natural habitat, to see what kinds of trees they chose and how they existed within the ecosystem.

Life is made rich by the connections we make along the way. For when, for a long time or just a moment, our path converges with someone else's, and we leave a mark on each other. It's what makes travelling my favourite thing in the world, and returning home so bittersweet.

I'm so grateful for everyone I've spent time with over the last 6 weeks in Costa Rica. Thank you to all my @loopabroad students for teaching me so much, for always giving me 100% and for grabbing life with both hands. I genuinely can't wait to see what you get up to next on your journeys into the best career in the world. Keep putting your love for animals out there, even if (and especially when) they don't always return it.

#throwbackthursday - 6 weeks in Bhutan in 30 seconds 🇧🇹

I finished 2023 in Bhutan, volunteering with @vets_beyond_borders. Having the opportunity to live in a remote Himalayan kingdom, tourist-tax free, focusing on nothing but living day to day and helping animals is why that (despite its many and varied downfalls) I still believe veterinary is the best career in the world.

But somehow that was 3 months ago! Time passes so quickly that I feel like I never have a chance to reflect. Or rather, I get so caught up in making the next plan that something I spent so long looking forward to and then weeks of my life living through quickly becomes a neglected memory.

I do have some really exciting plans for 2024, but I also turn 30, which is the biggest reminder of how time gets away. This year I want to focus on intentionally living in the moment, being grateful for what I have right now and not wishing time away. I'm so grateful for all the opportunities I'm able to take, and even more so for the people present in my life, and I don't want to take any of it for granted.

Global wildlife populations have plummeted by an average of 69% since 1970. Without serious action by world leaders that's not going to turn around. ⏳

🐾 February 27th is World Spay Day, a day devoted to raising awareness of the life-saving importance of neutering dogs and cats ✂️

I've just returned from 2 weeks in São Tomé e Principe 🇸🇹 volunteering with The Associação Amigos dos Animais (AMA) @ama_stp on their campaign, where we humanely sterilised over 300 dogs in just 10 days 🙌

Millions of unwanted animals are living on the street around the world without enough food or shelter, and dying in their millions because of it. World Spay Day started in the USA 🇺🇲 where 3 million homeless dogs and cats are euthanised every year, because there's nowhere for them to go. 😿

In many countries, like STP, they are left to roam, where not only do they suffer but also play a significant role in the spread of disease to humans (e.g. rabies) and the wildlife (e.g. distemper, parvo, rabies) they share the ecosystem with. 🐒

Surgical sterilisation is a humane and sustainable method of population control, allowing a stable population of dogs and cats in an area, and therefore:

▶️ Reduced disease transmission 🦠
▶️ Better relationships between and animal and human populations 😻
▶️ Reduced undesirable hormone-related behaviours such as roaming and aggression 🤬
▶️ And of course a huge reduction in the number of unwanted puppies and kittens dying on the street 🪦

The veterinary intervention also allows animals to be treated, and takes away the risk of common reproductive diseases such as TVT (transmissible venereal tumours), pyometra and mastitis. 🩺

AMA play a massive role in improving dog welfare on São Tomé. As well as surgery the dogs also receive parasite medication (lots of mange, heartworm etc), treatment for wounds and tumours, pain relief, and more care if they need it. It was a real privilege to see the incredible work AMA do for the animals and people of STP ♥️💛💚

The first week of the surgery campaign here in São Tomé 🇸🇹 is done! Nearly 170 dogs have been sterilised and treated as part of a big push to control the street dog population and improve animal welfare. 🩺

Since the inception of Associação Amigos dos Animais in 2020 the lives of dogs on the island have already improved dramatically, so it's a real honour to play a small part in this story. 🐾

Time for a well deserved beach holiday this weekend, then back to it Monday! 🏖️

Operating on a Sambar Deer casualty in Bhutan last month 🇧🇹

Interfering with injured wildlife always raises ethical and welfare concerns, especially if the injury means they won't be able to be released back into the wild. With prey species like deer it's especially worrying as they can be so afraid of being confined they can injure themselves further or die from stress.

Incredibly this girl was super sweet and after a few weeks habituation would tolerate medications, injections and handling, and even started to show us affection. It was such a pleasure to work with her and I'm very pleased to report that after a fairly gruelling surgery she is doing fantastically well. It's taking a lot of self discipline to not post more graphic photos 😅

I love looking back at the work in progress photos of this painting - over the course of 2+ years I nearly gave up on it so many times as I just couldn't get it to match the vision I had in my head. Every few months I'd go back to it (at one point I left it alone for a full year...), and try to implement the lessons I'd learned from other paintings.

I'm so glad I never gave up completely because eventually a switch was flicked and it all came together, and now it's one of my favourite paintings. It was an ambitious idea for so early on in my oil painting journey, and I needed to get better before I could do it justice. I learned so much from this cheetah family, and they're hanging on my wall to remind me to never give up 🐆

Throwback to Sketch for Survival 2022, the first time I exhibited with them with this oil sketch of an African Wild Dog titled 'Nightcrawler'. For this piece I wanted the viewer to connect with the dog, using the intensity of the low perspective and his dilated pupils to make you feel like you really are face to face with this hunter in the dark...

This competition was an opportunity for me to experiment with light, altering my daylight reference photo to a nocturne. I love the deep teal star-strewn sky (I know a lot of you did too!) and I'd love to develop this study into a larger painting in future, maybe rather than a sole subject instead depicting a clan of hyaenas or a nighttime hunt. My latest painting, as yet untitled Giraffe. Oil on canvas, 24x24", 2023. 🦒

Reference photo gratefully sourced from @wildlifereferencephotos. Beautifully high definition photo as always, and I just loved the sassy expression captured by photographer Andrew Ingledow on this Kordofan giraffe.

The Kordofan giraffe (𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮) is a critically endangered subspecies native to central Africa, specifically found in the border regions between Chad, Cameroon and Central African Republic. There are currently estimated to be just 2,300 individuals remaining in the wild, according to @giraffe_conservation, with a decline of more than 80% in the last 30 years largely due to poaching for meat and their valuable hides.
